Weaving Techniques
Hand-Knotted Carpets: The most traditional and durable. Each knot is individually tied by hand onto the warp threads.
Knots Used: Primarily Persian Knot (Senneh) for finer detail and Turkish Knot (Ghiordes) for symmetry and strength.
Quality Indicator: Knots Per Square Inch (KPSI). Higher KPSI indicates a finer, more detailed, and more valuable carpet. Finesses can range from around 12 KPSI upwards, with higher quality rugs having much more.
Hand-Tufted Carpets: Made by punching strands of yarn into a canvas backing using a hand-operated tufting gun. Faster to produce than hand-knotted, they are also a hand-made product.
Flatweave Carpets (Durries): Woven like fabric by interlacing warp and weft threads, with no pile. They are lighter, reversible, and often used for more casual spaces.
